Sunset Sail in Old San Juan Bay
A very chilled 2 or 3 hours sailing in the bay, where you can see Old San Juan and the forts from the water. Some of them include drinks or let you bring your own. You can find this through Airbnb experiences.
Fly Kites at el Morro Fort in Old San Juan
A classic, you will probably see many people doing it. You can buy the kite from a vendor around there.
Paddleboarding or kayaking at the Condado Lagoon
You can rent a boat by the hour and go around, take sunscreen! Also fun to do in the sunset. You can also find this through Airbnb experiences, or directly on the lagoon (Parque Jaime Benitez, or by the Condado Plaza hotel) there are few providers.
Piñones
A very nice long strip of beach with food stalls / shacks dotted around. Card might be accepted in the restaurants but not in the beachy shacks. I’d recommend taking cash. You can Uber there and back from anywhere in San Juan about 25 minute drive. A favorite spot is “Vacia Talega beach”.
Playa Esperanza beach
Located in Manatí, a 45-minute drive from San Juan, within a protected natural reserve, after a short walk you arrive to a gorgeous enclosed beach. Also in the property is Hacienda Esperanza which offers tours in Spanish and English, and tickets can be bought here (scroll all the way down to switch the site to English language).
Mar Chiquita Beach
Also located in Manatí, 45 minutes from San Juan in the North coast. Good for a quick day trip. You can bring your own picnic lunch or get something there, namely chicken skewers or pinchos, and piña coladas and drinks. Note: they are overpriced because they can. I suggest bringing enough cash.
Beaches to visit around San Juan
Ocean Park Beach, Escambrón, Vacia Talega and Balnerario Isla Verde. All nice and easy to get to. There might be vendors around selling beers or water but it’s better to bring your own stuff and take it back with you.
El Yunque Rainforest
The biggest rainforest in the Caribbean and North America region. It has plenty of trails and waterfalls to dip in. You can take a tour and learn about the flora and fauna, but it is also safe and fun to go as your own group. Recommend bringing snacks to set up a little picnic by the waterfall, I’ve even taken wine. It’s about an hour from San Juan, you can likely take an Uber, but might be tricky to book one from there to come back. I would recommend either renting a car, or booking a local taxi for drop off and pick up (Ana can help). Note: On the way back, it’s fun to stop at the Kioskos de Luquillo, a strip of little shacks right on the beach.
Toro Verde Zip Lining
If you like adventure, this is your opportunity to do some zip lining and see the most beautiful mountain sights. You have to book in advance. It is close to the rainforest, renting a car, booking a tour would be your best option for getting there.
La Parguera
Small fishing town in the South. Houses are built on stilts into the water. You can rent jet skis, kayaks and small boats to go around the mangroves and spend the day. There is also one of the 4 bioluminescent bays, which you can book a tour for in the evening.
Weird fact: you can legally rent a small boat if you have a foreign driver’s license. We are not sure how this works, but if you are Puertorican, you need a boating license, if you are not, then you can rent it with a driver’s license. Weird, but convenient. Rent away. They are tiny and not hard to maneuver. Take a hat.
Bioluminescent Bay
Close to La Parguera you can book a night tour to see a once and a lifetime natural phenomenon experience as the water of the bay glows a blue-green light created by non-toxic single-cell plankton.
Rincón
The surfers town and sport. You can find amazing waves to surf, as well as beautiful beaches and sunsets.
Ponce
Where Ana’s dad’s side of the family is proudly from. You can do a walking tour around the town, have some amazing artisanal ice cream and visit the famous Parque de los Bomberos. You can also book a tour to go to the amazing island of Caja de Muerto that has breathtaking crystal clear water.
Fajardo
Rent a boat or catamaran to go to the beautiful keys of Icacos and Palomino.
Culebra
One of our most beautiful small islands where you can find one of the top 5 beaches of the world.
Flamenco Beach
You can take the ferry from Fajardo for a day trip, stay in Airbnbs or even do some camping. There are also options for flying. Beware the airplanes are very small and about a 15min ride. You can find more information on Trip Advisor or Discover Puerto Rico website.
Vieques
Our other island sister to Culebra with beautiful beaches, including the Black San Beach and another bioluminsce bay. You can get there by ferry or plane.
