Café El Punto
- Your place to go for a good traditional Puerto Rican Mofongo.
La Mallorca
- Classic breakfast and lunch cafeteria.
Casa Cortés
- If you are a chocolate lover this is the place for you, where you can find all types of meals with a touch of local Puerto Rican chocolate.
Spiga
- Small local Italian coffee and lunch place, with amazing fresh pasta and pastries. Only open on weekdays. We’ve probably bought 1,000 coffees from there.
El Mesón Sandwiches
- One of Ana’s favorite spots! Original fast food from Puerto Rico, great for breakfast and lunch. You can find them all over including in Old San Juan.
Il Barco
- Traditional Italian with a hipster twist, i.e., they often use whole wheat pasta and such. Joe loves the Carbonara from there.
Ostra Cosa
- It is located in a square across San Jose Church. Casual al fresco dining with great fresh lobster.
Trois Cent Onze (311)
- Traditional French fine dining. Real cute. Ana celebrated her 15th and 16th birthday here as well as her high school graduation, some new year’s eves, some other people’s birthdays probably too…
La Lanterna
- Fine dining Italian cuisine with a beautiful classical Old San Juan interior courtyard. Booking required by phone as it is small and popular.
Marmalade
- High level fine dining, international creative cuisine using local produce and ingredients. The chef is excellent and the service is superb. It is pricey, but delicious. Only open for dinner and I recommend booking.
Taberna Lúpulo
- A favorite of the Hernández family. The closest thing to a British pub in Old San Juan. It specializes in craft beer, and has more than 100 options, including around 50 beers on tap. They have plenty of Puerto Rican craft beers. Some favorites include the Coquí and Santo Viejo from Old Harbor Brewery.
La Factoría
- Included as one of the best 50 bars of the world. It’s a rustic (on purpose) cocktail bar in San Sebastián street. The lavender mule is their classic. You feel them the next day (just saying). This is a place where you can find multiple rooms, speak-easy style, and they play different types of music in each. There is a room for everyone. If you are looking to dance some salsa this is your spot–just head to the last room! When inside, look at where people are going through a door to the right side (slightly behind) of the bar (not the toilets). There’s two more bars to the back. The furthest back bar is the most fun. It’s a bar labyrinth which makes it the most fun.
La Cubanita
- Same concept as Factoria, rustic-looking cocktail bar, really nice. On San José street, next to Factoria. Pro-tip: go further inside towards the right (in front of the toilets) and there is a secret(ish) cave-style bar.
- As you’ll see, Old San Juan is full of bars, just walk around and any place will have a good vibe!
Wilo Eatery & Bar
- The restaurant of our wedding caterer! It’s a restaurant and a small market, everything is yum. Joe’s faves include the bistec sandwich and the tuna tartare. It’s in the city of Guaynabo, a 20-25min Uber from San Juan.
Fidela Pizza
- Great pizza and vibes, with an awesome selection of natural wines to pair–just make sure you get there early as it’s walk-in only, but you can go get a drink at La Penúltima while you wait 😉
Panoteca San Miguel
- Exquisite independent bakery owned by Cordon Bleu trained baker Diego San Miguel. Closes at 4pm, except for the Pizzoteca (pizza night) on Thursday evenings. It’s a 20 minute drive as well.
La Placita
- A classic going out spot in San Juan. Immerse yourself with the locals as you encounter multiple bars with Latin music. Ana once described it as a more rustic, hispanic, mini Covent Garden. There’s bars and restaurants around the market building (called “Plaza del Mercado”, hence the name meaning “small plaza”).
La Santurcina
- Another great brick-oven pizza spot in Santurce, walk-in only!
Vianda
- Creative cuisine with great food and an easy reservation process (open-table). Higher on the price-side, but delicious.
Celeste
- Creative seafood, very tasty and very hipster–but if you’re into that, it’s very good! Note, higher on the price-side as well but great wine pairings 😉 Take an uber here, even if you’re staying in Old San Juan.
La Penúltima
- Craft beer bar in Santurce. Walking distance from La Placita. You can also find some bar food and snacks here. Cocktails are amazing as well.
Santaella
- Fine dining right in La Placita that also has a rooftop bar. Really nice.
Lote 23
- An outdoor food stall place with craft beers, cocktails, and other yummy food. Nice to spend an afternoon.
Miramar Foodtruck Park
- Similar to Lote 23, has different types of food and drinks, and on the weekends they usually have live music! It is also walking distance to “La Calle Cerra”, an upcoming neighborhood with many bars and street art.
Jamón Jamón:
- Spanish tapas restaurant with big screens showing football. This is where we watched the FIFA final. The owner is Argentinian, you can imagine how it went.
Buns
- Think Shake Shack vibes, amazing burgers and fries. Great after a night out to cure a hangover. They have a few locations including Condado and Old San Juan.
Cocina al Fondo
- Incredible Puerto Rican gourmet restaurant. Only opens Th/Fri/Sat for dinner. Needs a reservation in advance (by text or calling), especially as they just won the a James Beard Award!
Los Pinos in Miramar
- Open 24/7, general Puerto Rican fare with some American options.
El Churry
- A famous Puerto Rican sandwich food truck. It’s almost a rite of passage when visiting Puerto Rico after a great night out. You can order from Uber Eats as well!
Calle Cerra (Cerra Street)
- Located in Santurce, 15 mins from Old San Juan/Condado. There are several bars in this area surrounded by street art. All vibes, from local Puertorrican bar to more hipster/speakeasy vibes. Some popular ones are Esquina del Watusi, La Disquera, Machete, El Nie. Some bars have food too.
